PVACF APF Southern States Competition Write up
Paralyzed Veterans Powerlifting organized by the Central Florida Chapter competed in the APF Southern States Championship on October 22 in Orlando Florida. We had one of our athletes actually competing who is a member of the Central Florida Chapter Paralyzed Veterans of America a Mr. Johnny Alexander an Army Vietnam veteran double amputee and spinal cord injured.
As one of our sponsored athletes we paired him with a coach from the team who assisted him throughout the day with his warm-ups which went very well. We also accompanied is lifting with our team nurse who assisted with transferring to and from the bench as well as strapping down the legs of our athlete. We practiced several times before the actual competitive benchpress lift attempts occurred. Johnny went 2 /3 with successful lifts of 175 pounds and 203 pounds. His 3rd attempt which would have been a personal record and a competition record of 230 pounds was unsuccessful. The day as a whole was a success with Johnny learning some new techniques and being able to link up with a powerlifting club close to his home in Gainesville Florida.
Johnny Alexander Competing in the APF Southern States Championship
Paralyzed Veterans of America Central Florida Chapter would like to think Daniel Tinajero for his coaching and assistance handling the lifter as well as Tina Kendrick who performed as our team nurse during the competition. I would also like to thank our other volunteer Christina Rey who assisted in running our donation table.
We were also successful in raising awareness for not only the powerlifting program but for Paralyzed Veterans of America Central Florida Chapter efforts as an organization to bring to light veterans living with spinal cord injuries diseases and disorders within the Central Florida area. We appreciate Brian Schwab And Orlando Barbells collaboration with the American Powerlifting Federations assistance in getting our lifter into and competing with the able-bodied lifters. The APF Southern States Championship was a great starting point for this burgeoning program. Currently we have 3 lifters and one coach working out of the Central Florida chapter.
